He argues that there is no such thing as ‘Chinese science fiction’. The stories are virtually all well written, but Liu’s introduction sets the somewhat clinical tone that much of the book follows. That’s largely true of his own English fiction as well, and it’s true of the stories here – to an extent that 340 pages of it felt more flat than exciting. I’ve found Liu’s translations to be literate and intelligent, but dry. That’s always frustrating no matter how good the translator, there’s a lot of nuance that’s lost, and much is dependent on the translation approach. ![]() I don’t speak any form of Chinese, and certainly don’t read it, so I’m dependent on translation for my access to Chinese works. ![]() That enthusiasm was largely, but not entirely, satisfied. Robert Kirkman is not a boring man, though he insists he’s an ordinary guy who treats his work as if he were doing a blue-collar job. ![]() An audience that read the comics still needs to get something new out of the show.” I think ‘Invincible’s’ going to be a much more faithful adaptation than ‘The Walking Dead,’ but again with the surprise and the twists and turns. There are going to be new elements of the show that aren’t present in the comics, but the overall arc of characters should remain somewhat intact. “Learning from that experience going into ‘Invincible’ … I’m taking a more ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it’ mentality. This character didn’t die in the comics, let’s kill him in the show. ![]() ![]() “With ‘Walking Dead,’ I was much more like, ‘Yeah, change it! He’s more constrained in television but, thanks to comics, accustomed to collaborative work and feels he’s improving with experience that means his TV storylines are taking fewer liberties with the comics. It’s a race against the clock as Hogswatch morning approaches. With Death unwilling to inform Susan of what is going on, it’s up to her to learn the reason for her grandfather’s odd behaviour and uncover what has happened to the Hogfather. He’s nowhere to be found, and in his place is Death, trying to fill the big man’s over-sized coat. Aside from such hiccups, everything is perfectly normal, just the way she wants them to be.īut things take a turn for the stranger on Hogswatch Eve, a time when a jolly fat man is meant to be about delivering presents to all the good little girls and boys. She knows all too well how powerful imagination and superstition can be on the Discworld. Sure, she occasionally has to bash in the heads of monsters the kids imagine live under their beds or in the basement, but such things are old hat for someone like Susan. Susan Sto Helit, the granddaughter of Death himself, has settled into a life of education, living with a wealthy family as their astute and capable governess. Hogfather by Terry Pratchett is the 20th novel in the author’s comic fantasy Discworld series, and the fourth in the Death sub-series. ![]() |
